Tree Removal in Wellington
Trees in Wellington rarely come down in a paddock. They come down between two houses on a hillside, over a retaining wall, up forty steps from the street, or on a section where a truck simply can't get near it. Prana Tree removes trees from exactly these kinds of Wellington properties, safely, without damaging what's around them, using climbing and rigging rather than assuming a crane can just turn up.
We're based on the Kāpiti Coast and work throughout Wellington City. Every job starts with a free, no-obligation on-site quote.
When a Tree Actually Needs to Come Out
Not every tree that looks like a problem needs removing, and we won't tell you it does just because that's the easier sale.
Removal is the right call when a tree is dead or in terminal decline, structurally compromised in a way that puts something underneath it at real risk, or genuinely beyond what pruning or ongoing care can manage. If a healthy tree can reasonably be kept, with the right pruning, or just left alone, we'll say so. That's not a slogan; it's the actual starting point of every assessment.
If you've already been told a tree has to come out and you'd like a second opinion, our Arborist Consultation service is the right place for that.

Removing Trees From Wellington Properties
Wellington sections aren't like the rest of the region, and the site is usually the hardest part of the job, not the tree itself.
Steep and terraced sections.
A lot of Wellington properties are built on a slope, with houses stacked above and below each other and very little flat ground anywhere near the tree. There's often no real drop zone, nowhere a section of trunk can simply be lowered and left. That changes the whole approach to the job before a chainsaw is ever started.
Access that isn't built for tree work.
Steps instead of a driveway, a narrow path between fences, a shared right-of-way with a neighbour, or no vehicle access at all. We plan around this at the quote, how the crew and gear get in, and just as importantly, how the wood gets out when there's no truck parked next to the tree.
Wind.
Wellington is genuinely one of the windiest cities in the country, and it isn't just uncomfortable, it affects which days aerial work can safely go ahead, and it shapes how exposed trees have grown and how they tend to fail. Scheduling around it is a normal part of the job here, not an excuse.
What's underneath and around the tree.
Small sections mean close boundaries, and a Wellington removal often means working directly above a neighbour's roof, fence, or garden rather than an empty paddock. Protecting what's below, and what's next door, is planned for before the climb starts.
Slope stability.
Roots help hold a hillside section together. On a genuinely steep site, that's worth thinking about honestly before a large tree comes out, not after.

How We Remove Trees on Difficult Sites
Most Wellington removals aren't a straight fell into open space, there usually isn't the space for one. Instead, the tree is climbed and taken down in sections, each piece lowered under control with rigging rather than dropped, so the material lands exactly where it's meant to and nothing below is put at risk.
Our approach doesn't depend on crane access. We use climbing and rigging where the site calls for it, and on a lot of Wellington sites, steep, terraced, boxed in by fences and neighbouring houses, there often isn't anywhere a crane could even be positioned. Climbing and rigging isn't a fallback here; on a genuinely constrained site, it's usually the only method that actually works, and it lets us take a tree down cleanly in spaces a larger machine couldn't reach at all.
Where there's real open space around a tree, a more direct felling approach can still be the more efficient option, we'll use whichever method actually suits your site, not whichever one photographs better.
Hazardous and Difficult Removals
Some trees are more demanding than others, genuinely dead or decayed wood that behaves unpredictably under a chainsaw, a tree with a new lean, storm-damaged limbs still hanging, or a large tree close enough to a house or boundary that there's no margin for error. These are removed the same way as everything else on a constrained site, climbed, sectioned, and lowered under control, just with more planning before anyone leaves the ground.
If a tree has been damaged in a storm and needs to come down as scheduled work, that's what this page covers. If it's actively dangerous right now, go straight to Emergency Tree Services instead of waiting on a general enquiry.
Consent and Protected Trees in Wellington
Most private trees in Wellington don't need council consent to remove, but it depends on where the tree sits and what it is, and it's worth actually knowing rather than assuming either way.
Wellington City Council's district plan generally doesn't control removal of ordinary trees on private property. Where consent typically does come into it is trees on the council's notable or scheduled tree list, trees within a heritage area, or trees affected by a specific resource consent condition on the property. If you're not sure whether any of that applies to your tree, it's worth checking directly with the council before assuming either way.
One thing worth knowing if you're near a boundary: Wellington City, Hutt City, Upper Hutt, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast are five separate councils with five separate sets of tree rules. A tree that needs no consent at all in one area can be treated completely differently a few kilometres away, so the rules that apply are the ones for the specific property, not a general Wellington-wide answer.
Trees Near Power Lines
Keeping trees clear of power lines is generally the tree owner's responsibility, and only qualified people may cut within four metres of a live line. Our work is on the tree, cutting back or removing vegetation to maintain clearance, not on the electrical network itself. In Wellington City and the Hutt Valley, the lines company is Wellington Electricity; if your tree is close enough to a line that approach-distance rules apply, that's the first call to make, and we'll explain what's involved at the quote.
What the Day Looks Like
We start with a proper site visit, not a quote from a photo, because on a constrained Wellington site the access and the surroundings usually matter more than the tree's size. From there:
- 1
A clear written quotation based on the work required, with no obligation to proceed.
- 2
Scheduling that accounts for weather, on a genuinely windy day, aerial work sometimes has to wait, and we'd rather reschedule than take an unnecessary risk.
- 3
Protection for your property, and your neighbour's, throughout the job.
- 4
A full site clean-up once the work is done.
What happens to the wood depends on the site and what you'd like, chipped and taken away, or left as mulch or firewood where suitable. See our Green Waste Removal & Mulching page for more.
What Affects the Cost
There's no set price for tree removal. On Wellington sites, access can have a major impact on the cost, sometimes more than the tree's size. The main things that change the cost:
Access
whether the crew and gear can get to the tree directly, or whether everything has to be carried up or down a steep, stepped site
How the material comes out
a straightforward truck-side removal is a different job from carrying sections down forty steps to the street
Proximity to structures and boundaries
working directly above a house, fence, or neighbouring property takes more time and more careful rigging than open ground
Size and condition of the tree
Clean-up and disposal
A free, on-site quote is the only reliable way to price a job like this, a photo or a phone description can't show us the steps, the slope, or how tight the access actually is.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you remove a tree if there's no vehicle access to my property?
Often, yes, this is one of the most common situations we deal with in Wellington. We plan for access at the quote, including how material gets off the site when a truck can't get close.
Do you use a crane?
No, we work by climbing and rigging, taking trees down in sections and lowering them under control. On a lot of Wellington's steep, tight sections there's often nowhere a crane could be positioned anyway, so this is usually the method that actually works rather than a fallback.
Do I need council consent to remove a tree in Wellington?
Generally not for an ordinary tree on private property, but it depends on whether the tree is on the council's notable or scheduled tree list, within a heritage area, or affected by a specific consent condition. Worth checking directly if you're unsure, and worth knowing that neighbouring councils have different rules entirely.
Will removing a large tree affect my section's stability?
On a steep site, roots do contribute to holding the slope together, so it's a genuine consideration for a large removal on a hillside property. We'll talk through this honestly as part of the assessment rather than treating every removal the same.
How much does tree removal cost in Wellington?
Access can have a major impact on the cost on Wellington sites, a tree a truck can park next to is a different job from one down a flight of steps. We quote in person, for free, so the number reflects your actual site.
Can you remove a tree close to my neighbour's property?
Often, yes, a lot of Wellington removals involve working directly above or alongside a neighbouring section. We plan the rigging and drop zones around protecting what's next door, and where access across a neighbour's property is genuinely needed, that's something to sort out before work starts.
What happens if it's too windy on the day?
Aerial work depends on safe conditions, and Wellington wind is a real factor. If a day isn't safe for climbing, we'd rather reschedule than take a risk, we'll work with you to find the next suitable window.
